This cleansing spray that leaves them odor-free (except for a nice, very mild, herbal shampoo odor), shiny, and feeling very soft. I just spritz them all over and rub them with a towel, out in the garage before they come back into the house. It takes less than 5 minutes to do both dogs.

1 spray bottle
4 1/4 cups water
1 tsp dried rosemary leaves
2 tsp dried mint leaves
1 tsp vinegar

In a small saucepan, pour roughly 2 cups of the water (I used one bottle of spring water). Add 1/2 tsp vinegar, 1 tsp dried rosemary leaves, and 2 tsp dried mint leaves to the water, then bring to a rolling boil. Boil for 2 – 3 minutes, then remove from heat. Allow to steep for another 2 – 3 minutes.

Pour the liquid into a bowl – through a strainer to catch all the rosemary and mint leaves – then add the remaining water. Once it has cooled to a reasonable temperature, pour into the spray bottle. Add remaining 1/2 tsp of white vinegar, and shake vigorously.

It’s ready to use right away – always shake before using. Just spritz it all over your dog and rub dry with a towel. It doesn’t smell vinegar-y at all, and is a very mild scent that doesn’t “perfume” your dog. It’s just the trick for getting out mild bad odors. Oh, and rosemary is supposed to have some anti-flea and anti-insect properties as well.

Long Coat Chihuahua

No matter what you call them, long hair Chihuahua or long coat Chihuahua, they are a thing of beauty. One of the few long hair breeds that don’t need to go to the “beauty shop”. Long haired Chihuahuas are easily kept up with weekly brushing at home, make sure to use lukewarm water to wash them with a good quality shampoo & conditioner.

The Puppy Uglies – 4 to 8 months of age

Does this mean that your puppy will actually be ugly?  The answer is a huge NO!  It reminds me a bit of a cute gangly looking teenager, for a bit…but not ugly.  For the chihuahua is one of the most beautiful dogs in the world and this what is known as a “necessary evil”.  It is a step that leads your wonderful dog into the gorgeous dog that he or she was meant to be!

Some long hair Chihuahua owners hope that they can escape the fate of the Puppy Uglies with a dose of good luck.  Others have heard of this phrase and do not understand the sometimes shocking results of this long hair Chihuahua term.

Still other Chi owners have puppies that are currently in this stage and mistake the symptoms for more serious medical issues.

Let’s put to rest some of the myths regarding this issue and discuss all of the aspects of what exactly this term means to you and your long hair Chihuahua.

What are the Puppy Uglies, can you avoid them, what happens during this time and how long does this last?  We will discuss all of these issues to help clarify the Puppy Uglies.

General Overview

Long hair Chihuahua are born with wonderfully fluffy coats of fur; this is one the features that makes this dog breed so amazingly special and unique. There is a brief interruption where the fur will fall out. This is only temporary; once the adult coat comes in, your long hair Chihuahua will have silky, shiny hair. The Puppy Uglies is simply a stage that all long hair Chihuahua dogs go through as they are growing. Just as humans enter different stages of growing, this is a phase in which your long hair Chihuahua is losing its baby fur. The “Uglies” will be the stage in which the baby fur is gone, but the adult fur has yet to grow in. The phase will end when the adult fur has fully grown in.

A long hair Chihuahua puppy is born with just one coat of fur. It is soft and so heavenly smooth. After the Puppy Ugly stage is done, the long hair Chihuahua will have its adult 2 coats of fur: undercoat and overcoat. The undercoat will be short and thick, the overcoat will be longer, soft and gorgeous.

Can I Avoid This Stage?

You may, if your long hair Chihuahua is in the 20th percentile of Chis that do not appear to go through this stage. This 20% will actually enter the stage during winter months and not have a full-blown phase; therefore not appearing to have this.

The other 80% of healthy long hair Chihuahua dogs will go through this stage. Please note that we stated “healthy long hair Chihuahua”. This process, in which the puppy coat is shed and the adult coat grows in is an elemental part of a growing long hair Chihuahua.

How Can I Be Sure My Long Hair Chihuahua is Having Puppy Uglies?

This is an important element because there are many medical issues, some serious, that cause a dog to lose fur. If your long hair Chihuahua is losing its fur and they are not at the correct age of having Puppy Uglies, this would be a red flag to bring your dog to the vet ASAP.

The 80% of long hair Chihuahuas that enter this stage will do so at the age of 4 to 8 months old. The phase will end when the long hair Chihuahua is 10 to 14 months old. If your long hair Chihuahua is losing substantial amounts of its coat, enough to show patches of skin and the dog is not between 8 and 14 months, you will want to bring them to the veterinarian as soon as possible.

What Else Can Cause Fur Loss?

Beside the Puppy Uglies, fur loss can occur with the long hair Chihuahua from food or environmental allergies, thyroid problems and a host of other medical issues. Most can be resolved with treatment; which is why it is so important to have your dog checked out. However, if your long hair Chihuahua is at the right age to lose its baby fur, there is no reason to rush to the vet. The veterinarian will not be able to stop this stage, nor should they! It is a necessary step to your dog becoming an adult long hair Chihuahua and having that wonderful permanent fluffy fur.

Where Does this Occur?

This will vary from dog to dog. That is where this term got its name. While we would never begin to think that a long hair Chihuahua could actually be ugly, the fur loss can occur in strange areas, thus making the dog look very odd for a while! The fur loss may be only on the legs, causing the dog to look a bit like a Poodle shaving gone awry. The long hair Chihuahua may lose fur just around the eyes, causing the dog to look like it got a bit too close to a flame that sizzled off their “eyebrows”. It is suggested to take this phase for what it is and have a bit of humor. Your long hair Chihuahua is not really ugly, he or she is an adorable little creature who is going through a very large change.

What Can I Do to Help?

Your long hair Chihuahua only needs your love and also a bit of care concerning grooming. Do not stop giving your dog baths and brushings, thinking that this will help slow down fur loss. The baby fur must come out and your dog must be kept clean. To help this process along, you can wash your dog with warm water (instead of lukewarm) and use a Kong ZoomGroom (Found at places like Petsmart) when washing and for regular brushing. This will help the hair to fall out faster while stimulating the new hair to grow in for your long hair Chihuahua. When we discovered the ZoomGroom, it made a drastic difference in the time it took for our long hair Chihuahua to get their beautiful adult coats in! You will want to be careful when you are brushing your dog; the skin that has little hair or is completely bald will be sensitive. Brush carefully around those areas on your long hair Chihuahua.

Be sure to use a high quality dog fur conditioner, as this will help keep the skin soft as well. Make sure that your long hair Chihuahua has soft elements to lay on, such as a soft doggie bed, pillows and cushions. If the dog has lost hair on the legs, sores may appear if your long hair Chihuahua is laying on hard surfaces. Keep your eyes out for any sores or red areas that seem irritated and bring these to the attention of your long hair Chihuahua’s vet if your effort to provide a soft home is not working.

According to the AKC standard:

“In Long Coats, the coat should be of a soft texture, either flat or slightly curly, with undercoat preferred. Ears – Fringed. (Heavily fringed ears may be tipped slightly if due to the fringes and not to weak ear leather, never down.) Tail – Full and long (as a plume). Feathering on feet and legs, pants on hind legs and large ruff on the neck desired and preferred. Disqualification – In Long Coats, too thin coat that resembles bareness.”

Wait, did that just say that ALL of our puppies are litter box trained? Yes, all of our puppies are litter box trained. At around 4wks of age our puppies start exploring their space and find the litter box. By 6wks of age they are completely litter box trained!

If they get busy playing and forget to look around for the box, they might have an accident. No big deal! Just move the poop into the litter box, and that makes a big difference. If there is an adjustment period, it doesn’t take long before your pup is back to being a litter box trained chihuahua puppy!

Sounds like a dance, right? You might say it is, but in our house, it’s everyday life. Or at least it’s how we walk!

Having a tiny teacup puppy in the house can be a lot of trouble. They follow you ever where and then find some where to hide. Then they proceed to eating something that they shouldn’t. Then the throw it up.

When these tiny teacup pups are on the floor, we all walk around barefoot. Teacup puppies tend to be underfoot and if you have shoes on, you won’t know if you are about to squish one! Then starts the shuffle. Even with barefeet, you can still step on one. So do the teacup shuffle your feet when you walk. It’s the safest thing to do until they learn not to be underfoot!

Like the unicorn, the teacup chihuahua is a mythical beast. While chihuahuas themselves do exist and they are the smallest of all the dog breeds there really is no such thing as a teacup chihuahua. Teacup chihuahua is a name that has been coined so that unscrupulous breeders can convince potential buyers that their teacup chihuahuas are different from other chihuahuas and therefore are worth more. Other common names include micro chihuahua, mini chihuahua, micro teacup chihuahua, micro mini chihuahua, pocket chihuahua and toy chihuahua puppies.

The Teacup Chihuahua Truth

The truth is that most chihuahuas are extremely small when compared to other dog breeds. The AKC standards for chihuahuas states these little dogs weight full grown should be between 2 and 6 pounds with the smaller dog being the most desirable. However, it is somewhat uncommon for a teacup chihuahua to be under 4 pounds full grown. Still, one could probably argue that a 4 pound dog could easily be classified as teacup chihuahua if such a classification existed.

While those unscrupulous breeders may try and sell you a teacup chihuahua and even tell you the teacup chihuahua puppy you buy will only be 3 pounds full grown a real breeder will never make such a guarantee. Although there are many reputable breeders who breed the smallest lines possible of these dogs because they know from experience that the line has a lot to do with the size a puppy will grow into they also know that even with the very smallest lines possible there will be the odd puppy that will end up being larger than most of his parents and even most of his lines. The best a reputable breeder will do is give you his or her best guess as to how large that itty bitty teacup chihuahua puppy will be full grown.

Ask most people how big their “teacup chihuahua” grew to as an adult. 95% of the people I talk to say their “teacup chihuahua” is now 8, 10, and even 15 pounds!!! This is a term that is way over used and by people out to make a quick buck!

An Interesting Breed

Just because that chihuahua is not really a teacup chihuahua after all doesn’t mean that a chihuahua isn’t worth owning. The fact is that these are very cute little dogs and an extremely interesting breed. One of the things that make them so interesting is that there is so much variety in this breed of a dog. For starters there are short coated and long coated chihuahuas. And this breed of dog comes in every color under the sun and a few mixed colors as well. We commonly have white chihuahuas, tri colored chihuahuas, chocolate chihuahuas, cream chihuahuas, fawn chihuahuas, red chihuahuas and even sable chihuahuas!

They are also the only breed of dog that is born with an incomplete skull so they need a bit of extra care for about 6 months or so until their skull completely closes. If all that wasn’t interesting enough, their little bugged out eyes gives them a permanently startled expression that is simply too cute for words.

Small Dog Big Personality

While some people may feel justified in calling this breed of dog a teacup chihuahua due to it’s small size you can’t claim it has a teacup sized personality because this is one little dog whose personality would put most larger breeds to shame. While chihuahuas can be quite affectionate and bond closely with owners and even chihuahuas they don’t like strangers and they also aren’t fond of other dogs that are not of their own breed.

They can become very protective of “their people” and will protect those they love against all comers as they seem totally unaware of their size. This makes them a great watch dog but, not particularly a good dog to have around small children whose behavior to their parents can sometimes be misinterpreted by the chihuahua. It’s just as well since their small size makes small children’s clumsiness and accidental carelessness a threat to them as well. Although all of our puppies are handled daily by our young daughter and unlike most dogs, ours love children! A tiny teacup chihuahua is always going to be best suited to a home without small children. With people who will take them to work and on vacation, these teacup chihuahuas are excellent for singles, young married couples who aren’t ready for human babies and for empty nesters!

With their owners, a teacup chihuahua are definitely the epitome of a lap dog and many are quite content to sit on their owners lap for hours on end. They are also highly demanding of attention and this makes them seem a little too needy for some people and just perfect for others.

The smaller Teacup Chihuahuas are actually the perfect little dog for those who love dressing up their pets as they can be quite accommodating as long as they are getting the attention they crave. A teacup chihuahua are also the perfect dog for apartments as their small stature makes it difficult for them to indulge in long vigorous exercise sessions. A walk around the block is plenty for a teacup chihuahua since their little legs are short!

Teacup chihuahuas are also highly intelligent and love learning simple tricks and can even be natural comedians when the mood strikes them. There really is nothing cuter than a tiny teacup chihuahua standing on it’s hind legs in a tutu dancing, or shaking or playing dead!
